Last week, I heard a news story on NPR about how piracy is expanding off the west coast of Africa.
Since the navy of oil-rich Nigeria is not strong, shipping companies have decided to hire private security. The reporter noted that security had become such a big business that it was not in the security companies' best interest to end piracy.
There is lesson in this story. Unfortunately, there are many governmental agencies that, if turned over to a for-profit corporation to administer, the bottom line of these corporations may not be in harmony with the best interest of the American public.
Before we privatize anything, there should be an acid test for public good versus corporate profits.
