Regardless of what the Supreme Court decides about the right of gays to marry, the future is in the private sector.
In middle America, the Illinois-based Caterpillar Inc. is stopping its support of the Boy Scouts through its charitable foundation. "We have inclusive policies here at Caterpillar Inc., and the foundation abides by those," explained spokesperson Rachel Potts. "We just don't feel that our two organizations align."
But there is hope: "If there's a change in the Boy Scouts' policies, we would certainly consider a change … if there was a change that aligned with what our non-discrimination policies are."
As with racism and sexism, one by one, companies and localities are changing. Equal protection of the law is one goal. Equal protection by the private sector is just as important.
