In "No gay Boy Scouts" (Forum, June 1), James Green disagrees "with the decision by the Boy Scouts to allow gay boys to be Scouts" because "boys sleeping next to each other in a tent may be tempted to push the limits," especially "If a young gay Scout acts on his inclinations."
It's hard to believe that Green is a long-time Scouter. If he were he would know that:
1. Many straight Scouts sleeping next to each other in tents are pushing the limits. They hardly need any encouragement from gay boys.
2. Right now, many gay Boy Scouts are sleeping next to other Scouts. The only difference the new policy effectually makes is that gay Scouts can be honest about their orientation. Nothing else really changes.
The whole gay Scout controversy is much ado about nothing.
