A tax to clean the air
With great hope, I read Jeff Miller's "Embrace clean air standards" (Opinion, May 18) on the Environmental Protection Agency's proposed rules to enhance air quality by limiting the sulfur in gasoline and requiring new emission technology in cars and trucks.
Since more than half of the pollution on the Wasatch Front comes out of tailpipes, these rules could significantly improve air quality and health.
To my surprise, the new rules would only cost about a penny per gallon of fuel and about $130 per new car. This is a reasonable price to pay for a 30 percent cut in pollutants that contribute to our smog and ozone pollution.
I value clean air and good health. I hope Gov. Gary Herbert does, too, and backs these new rules.
