UDOT's wise choice

There is a lot of negative press about the decision by the Utah Department of Transportation to begin the northwestern extension of Legacy Parkway at Glover Lane instead of Shepard Lane ("Green activists, neighbors blast new West Davis freeway plan," Tribune, May 17).

The negatives around the Shepard Lane proposed route far outweigh those of the Glover Lane route. For example:

• At least 10 homes would be taken on the Shepard Lane option; zero on Glover Lane.

• 214 homes would be within 300 feet of the freeway on Shepard; 37 on Glover.

• The costs would be millions more on Shepard. TRAX would have to be moved at a cost of more than $10 million.

• Choosing Glover won't affect a PGA golf course in Oakridge Country Club.

• Traffic will flow much better on Glover than on Shepard, where it will be a true alternate route to Interstate 15.

I congratulate UDOT for making a truly exceptional and difficult decision.
