Thank you, Duchess Creger, for your delightful letter about poems in The Tribune by student winners in the Utah State Poetry Society Junior Creative contest ("More poetry, please," Forum, May 6)
I've been associated with the Utah State Poetry Society for years, including a term as president. Every year, the society sponsors this contest for all Utah students, assisted by the Utah Division of Arts and Museums, the National Endowment for the Arts, and supported by The Salt Lake Tribune.
We've been told it's the biggest and best student poetry contest in the country. There are no entry fees, and every winner receives a cash prize.
We get hundreds of entries from public, private and home schools. Many wise teachers use the contest in teaching, and their students are consistent winners. A great deal of work by volunteer poets helps complete this project.
Every April, The Trib publishes some of the winners, giving publicity and honor to young writers. For more information, visit http://www.utahpoets.com. We welcome contacts, inquiries and volunteers.
