Two years ago the Salt Lake City Marathon was on death watch, owing to some financial controversies. Saturday's marathon showed the city at its very best.

A steady downpour could not dampen the enthusiasm of the more than 7,000 runners, hundreds of volunteers and large crowds in various neighborhoods that cheered even the slowest runners.

Of course, everyone was aware of the horrendous tragedy at the Boston Marathon, and many runners wore shirts and jackets with some kind of Boston theme. It was an emotional event with a wonderful sense of community.
