Re "Obama lambasts Senate gun vote as 'shameful day'" (Tribune, April 18):

It official. Our U.S. Senate has been sold to the highest bidders — special-interest groups and powerful lobbyists with deep pockets.

As is evident by the defeat of the sensible gun legislation that would have expanded background checks for gun buyers, we no longer have a "government of the people, by the people, for the people."

Several polls indicated this legislation was backed by nine out of 10 Americans, including me. While this bill wouldn't have prevented all future gun violence, it was a step in the right direction.

President Barack Obama said: "If this Congress refuses to listen to the American people and pass common-sense gun legislation, then the real impact is going to have to come from the voters." I'll make my voice heard the next time Sens. Mike Lee and Orrin Hatch are up for re-election.
