Letter: Ban billboards
First Published Mar 10 2013 04:55 pm • Last Updated Mar 10 2013 11:57 pm

In "Cash gets you billboards" (Forum, March 4), John Janson argued that cities should be allowed to regulate billboards, instead of the proposed SB76 that would strip cities of the power to ban digital billboards.

Since 1971, Washington, D.C., has banned any new billboards.

I have often resented billboards for blocking my view of an increasingly beautiful city or a sunset glow on the Wasatch.

I would welcome a bill that allows any city to ban new billboards and impose an end-of-life provision on existing billboards at some definite time in the future.

I would be most happy to see my taxes increased a little to help buy back each billboard from the sign company. The companies would also save a great deal of cash that they now spend to influence the Legislature.

Let’s have our legislators be responsible to the general public, not to billboard companies.
