A young woman was struck by a vehicle while crossing State Street near the Utah Children's Theatre at 3605 South ("Pedestrian critically injured in South Salt Lake accident," Tribune, March 3).

She was not in a crosswalk. Unfortunately, there are no crosswalks on State Street between 3300 South and 3900 South. If this woman had wanted to cross in a walk, she would have had to walk three long blocks north or south.

When the theater moved to this location, the lack of a crosswalk was brought to the attention of the Utah Department of Transportation, with no response.

Many children, mine included, attend classes, rehearsals and performances at the UCT. They would benefit greatly from a crosswalk or a light near the theater or somewhere closer than three blocks.

It's sad that someone has to lose their life to get the attention of UDOT.
