Letter: Who needs a permit?
First Published Mar 02 2013 01:01 am • Last Updated Mar 02 2013 01:01 am

I am a responsible gun owner and advocate of the Second Amendment, but HB76 proposed by state Rep. John Mathis, R-Vernal, baffles me ("Utah moves to legalize concealed guns without permit," Tribune, Feb. 21).

This bill would allow anyone over the age of 21 to legally carry a concealed firearm without a permit. It would also allow people to carry a concealed firearm with out the proper training and education that is given in a concealed weapons class.

No longer would it be required for a carrier of a concealed weapon to learn the laws for the firearm they carry, to learn about firearm parts and operation, to learn safe handling of firearms and to learn safe firing techniques.

Losing the proper education required for a concealed weapons permit can only lead to further confusion, fear of firearms and other problems for concealed carriers.
