In "Less fuel at 55" (Forum, Feb. 24), Frank Lewis proposed reducing the speed limit in high traffic areas on yellow or red burn days to save fuel and thereby reduce air pollution.
Last fall, I made some test runs with my car. Driving at 55 mph instead of 75, my gas mileage improved by 24 percent, with, I assume, an equivalent reduction in atmospheric emissions.
Those who are concerned about smog, those who want to reduce their driving expenses, and others who just want to do the right thing, could voluntarily reduce their speed without new regulatory dictates. After all, there is no law against driving at 55 mph.
