A living wage
This is an archived article that was published on sltrib.com in 2013, and information in the article may be outdated. It is provided only for personal research purposes and may not be reprinted.

Two simple ways to help fix the debt and economy:

1. Give any company a substantial tax break if it hires full-time employees and pays them a living wage (at least $15 an hour) and provides health care.

The minimum wage is just welfare for businesses. Taxpayers supplement their employees' pay with food stamps, health care, etc. When businesses pay low wages, we pay the price.

No one can live on the minimum wage without help. This would be a win-win for employees, employers and taxpayers.

2. Everyone, from minimum-wage earners to millionaires, pays the Social Security tax on all wages. I was appalled to learn that the rich don't pay the tax on wages above $110,100. Ridiculous.

These changes could help turn this country around.
