National Rifle Association president David Keene predicts that getting an assault weapons ban through Congress is unlikely ("NRA says Congress will not pass assault weapons ban," Tribune, Jan. 14). I hope he is wrong.
Inviting the NRA to participate in talks with Vice President Joe Biden's task force was a gesture made in good faith, but it is a lesson in futility. This Congress needs to stand up to the NRA and take measures that will protect the citizens of the United States.
The pros and cons of curbing gun violence and how to do it are endless. However, one thing is patently clear: American has been held hostage by the NRA long enough.
