I am sad that Spring City may become "the little city that armed all its citizens with guns" ("Utah town's leaders want all residents to own guns," Tribune, Jan. 9).
I love Spring City. My mother was born and raised there. I spent many summers as a child in Spring City. I now visit every year on Memorial Day weekend for its Heritage Day Celebration.
When I heard that the Spring City Council is going to strongly encourage all residents to arm themselves, including school teachers, I felt shock, disbelief and total sorrow for a city that I love. This is not the Spring City I know.
Is this really the image the City Council wants to promote of this wonderful historic city? Is its crime rate so high that it justifies this action? When I visit, must I, too, strap on my revolver for protection? Should I feel that unsafe when visiting Spring City?
Responsible gun ownership is a protected right, but please allow me the right not to own one or feel threatened by others' need to own one.
I would sorely miss Memorial Day weekends in Spring City!
