The National Rifle Association proposes that all schools should have armed guards ("NRA calls for armed police officer in every school," Tribune, Dec. 22). It's an inane proposal, but if that were the solution, we shouldn't stop at schools. We'd need an armed guard in every movie theater complex. We'd need an armed guard not only in every Sikh temple, but every church, cathedral, synagogue, mosque and Mormon meetinghouse. Heck, we'd need one in every McDonald's and U.S. post office.

And then what we'd have is an armed police state. The answer is not more guns in more places, but fewer guns that hold fewer bullets.
