In Julian Wells' letter on morality and gay marriage ("Nonsensical justice," Forum, Dec. 18), he states: "Just because Mormons believe it's immoral to consume alcohol doesn't mean a law should forbid others who don't think it's immoral to imbibe."

While I understand the point he is trying to make, he uses a poor example. I don't claim to represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but most Mormons I know don't think it's immoral to drink.

We don't equate drinking with pornography or prostitution, for example, two behaviors that are inherently immoral. We just happen to think that it's a pretty good idea to avoid the stuff, and we also have a code that asks us to abstain.

For a Mormon, abstaining from alcohol is a question of obedience and faith in inspired leadership. I don't think it's a question of morality.
