Re "Walmart opens on Salt Lake City's east bench" (Tribune, Nov. 24):
I couldn't be more proud of the Salt Lake City Planning Commission, City Council and the determined neighbors who showed those evil people at Walmart what we think of them. After a protracted battle by conscientious citizens and enlightened officials against the evils of the big box, we have ⦠a bigger box!
That's right Walmart wanted to build a smaller box. We sure showed it!
Never mind that this location has had a big-box retailer since the K-Mart opened in 1968 the only thing worse than a big box is a big box owned by Walmart.
I'm sure that Walmart's plan to reduce the size of the building, increase energy efficiency, install landscaping and trails, shrink the parking lot and reduce traffic was just an elaborate corporate trick. Just because we couldn't figure out what the trick was didn't stop us from blocking the investment. They were up to something, no doubt.
The last time a group of folks from Arkansas mistook Utah for part of the United States we showed them, too. Just ask the Fancher family.
Proud in Salt Lake City.
