Animus toward mining
This is an archived article that was published on sltrib.com in 2012, and information in the article may be outdated. It is provided only for personal research purposes and may not be reprinted.

I failed to understand how mention of Newmont Mining's shareholder lawsuit was necessary to Brian Maffly's "Mining magnate emerges as major U. of Utah donor," (Tribune, Nov. 5).

Such details rightly would have been absent in an article publicizing a Huntsman or Marriott gift. So, too, should have it been in your highlight of mining-magnate Pierre Lassonde's substantial philanthropic contribution to the University of Utah.

I attribute the inclusion to an animus against the mining industry. Since Rio Tinto's executives don't make similar donations to the U., it could be a long time until readers learn about that company's regrettable environmental record right here in Salt Lake County.
