The hostile reaction to The Tribune's endorsement of President Barack Obama demonstrates the overall dysfunctional nature of our nation's discourse. There is a general lack of respect and tolerance of opinions other than our own. This negative, narrow-minded climate cripples our government, preventing progress.

Won't our children see us as hypocrites, when we encourage them to be respectful of one another and willing to make compromises, then only to see that we are incapable of even the slightest bit of courteous discussion ourselves?

To cancel your subscription because you disagree with the editorial staff exposes your beliefs as so weak and flimsy that they can't stand up to the challenge of an opposing viewpoint. It would be a sad day if we all retreat to our corners, surrounded by only like-minded voices.

I challenge those who would bail on The Trib to stay and participate in the conversation.
