Robert and Barbara Ward's excellent Oct. 1 letter explained how former Gov. Mitt Romney "let us down." I wish President Barack Obama had read it before the debate.

On Oct. 3, the president let us down. As a Social Security recipient, and therefore a member of Romney's 47 percent club who depend on the government, I needed the president to defend me.

When Romney said that "the reason I'm in this race is there are people that are really hurting today in this country," I needed the president to ask if that included the 47 percent Romney so unabashedly, and behind close doors, rejected as moochers. And now, in public, he pretends his heart is bleeding for them.

In the blood sport of politics there is no room for gentlemen. As an avid basketball player, the president should have known that when you get a team down, you should show your killer instinct and crush them. Polls indicated that Romney was down, and the president let him lie and cheat and get back in the game.

And the ultimate judges are the clueless undecided voters who pretend to be more noble and discerning than the rest of us.
