Re "Challenger talks Hatch's age, says senator may die in next term" (Tribune, Sept. 18):

At Scott Howell's age of 59, what is this arrogance that is ignorant of his own life 20 years hence? I'm a Democrat, and at 79 I admire my friend Orrin's pluck and energy. His experience and learned competence allow him to get work done where it needs to be done.

For the sake of my party and my greater affinity to Howell's agenda, I was going to vote for him, but now? What does Howell think is going to get this country out of its Social Security addiction if it is not the contribution in productivity and competence of our seniors?

Go after Hatch for his ideas, but not his age. Seniors in both parties, and independents, have more to give than Howell can imagine, until he turns 79. Go Orrin!
