In "Romney's returns" (Forum, Aug. 25), Dave Argyle insists that the obsession with Mitt Romney's tax returns is "ridiculous." He says that Romney is simply doing what we all do using the existing tax laws to minimize the money we pay to the government. He is correct. We all work the system.
Argyle states that Romney's tax returns are a "separate issue" from whether we like the current tax laws. They are not separate at all.
Romney is a catalyst for this tax-equity discussion, and the fact that he will not release his returns simply shows that he realizes just how skewed the tax code is and how much it benefits the wealthy.
It is inconvenient for Romney that the country wants to discuss the fairness of our tax code at the same time he heads the Republican ticket, but he knew this would be an issue. It's far from ridiculous that we the people desire an honest debate with all information on the table from those who want the title of leader.
