With rape and sexual assault in the media spotlight, it is important for everyone to know the facts:
1. Pregnancy after rape can be prevented with a single progestin-only birth control pill. This medication is available over the counter to women age 17 and older (by prescription to younger women). This medication can be effective up to five days after sexual assault. It will not terminate an established pregnancy and is not considered an abortion pill.
2. Victims of sexual assault can receive medical care after an assault to prevent sexually transmitted infections.
3. Sexual assault forensic medical examinations are available to all victims of sexual assault in Utah with no out-of-pocket cost to the victim. These examinations allow patients to receive both health care and evidence collection. Victims are not required to cooperate with law enforcement to have forensic evidence collected.
4. Sexual assault advocacy services are available to victims throughout Utah, including support to both victims and their families as they deal with the trauma.
I encourage all victims to seek health care after a rape or sexual assault. To locate services in your community, call 1-888-421-1100.
