Republicans are adopting a national platform that endorses a constitutional ban on all abortions, with no exceptions for rape or incest or the health of the mother ("GOP stands firm: no abortions, no exceptions," Tribune, Aug. 22).
They're all so self-righteous about protecting the life of the unborn, but when it comes to protecting the life of children, well, that's another matter. Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan's budget, which the Republican-controlled House approved, would not only cut Medicare for the poor, but also food stamps and college tuition aid.
For Republicans, it seems that once you're born, you need to build your life all on your own.
Well, Hillary Clinton was right: It takes a village to raise children.
