Re "Utah Chick-fil-A supporters turn out for 'Appreciation Day'" (Tribune, Aug. 2):

Where's the beef? The rights and liberties actually at stake here are not freedom of speech and the rights to one's opinion, as the defenders of Chic-fil-A's president assert.

The rights of consenting, same-sex adult couples to liberty and the pursuit of happiness are what's under siege and actually abridged by the bigots who want to impose traditional, so-called, biblical marriage on the entire nation. If consenting same-sex adults have full and equal access to marriage, no harm will result to the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness of consenting opposite-sex adults.

Remember, not so long ago it was illegal in some parts for black and white consenting adults to marry.

Liberties and pursuits of happiness that do not cause needless harm and needless loss of another's freedom are all we're striving for here. We make progress in human rights by learning from and correcting the wrongs we have historically instigated against each other.
