Organize like ALEC

Rep. Steve McDaniel of the Tennessee House of Representatives stated that state legislators who are members of the American Legislative Exchange Council will not be bullied or "cave in to pressure" ("ALEC conservatives reject charges of corporate cronyism," Tribune, July 26). Apparently, he is not familiar with how quickly elected representatives in Utah "cave" to the bullying tactics of Gayle Ruzicka and the Utah Eagle Forum.

Just watch how fast school boards, state senators and representatives prostrate themselves to her demands. Then again, Ruzicka has stated that if the rest of us want access and influence, we should get as organized as she is. Organize a phone tree. Have your group get up in the balcony and have a physical presence. Overwhelm legislators before a vote with phone calls and text messages.

Members of ALEC probably subscribe to this argument. They got organized. They make their presence known. They have access.
