I am a little perplexed with how Utah's governmental supervision is working this year. The state continues to walk the tightrope with the danger of wildfires, but it won't remove the blindfold of putting a statewide ban on the purchase of fireworks. The governor says he has the authority to prohibit target shooting in dangerous areas, but he has been met by howls of anger from those who love their guns.
A fire is a fire, but the causes of fires come in many different forms. Target shooting, fireworks and vehicle mufflers make up a very small percentage of the fires, but they still put lives in danger and houses at risk and exhaust the resources of taxpayers and Mother Nature.
As the governor pleads for citizens to use common sense, he is being rebuffed by the fatalistic thinking flaw of "That could never happen to me."
In times of crisis, people have sacrificed what they have found sacred for the greater good, but how Utahns love their guns and fireworks!
