Cyclists deserve better

Shirley Olsen exhorts Big Cottonwood bicyclists to "stay in your lane" ("Cyclists, stay in lane," Forum, June, 11). What lane?

I happened to drive up Big Cottonwood Canyon this past Saturday. I was aghast at the terrible path that bicyclists have to ride on — there is no path! What little there is is chewed up in many places.

My hat's off to anyone in such physical shape that they choose to see the beautiful scenery via a bike. They deserve the right to explore the canyons just as much as a gas-hogging RV. What they don't deserve is the horrible conditions of the pavement.

Olsen says she has witnessed 15 vehicles lined up behind a bicycle rider. Well, I have witnessed at least that number behind an RV that refuses to pull over to the side to allow faster vehicles to pass.

We need to install proper bike paths in all canyons. Everyone should be able to enjoy the mountains in safety.
