The editorial "Gay marriage: Civil unions for all would be better" (Our View, May 11) is a chicken-hearted attempt to straddle the fence, a stance from which President Barack Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., have bravely jumped to what will be solid ground.
No doubt The Tribune editorial board has gone as far as its circumstances will permit toward embracing the principle of true equality for everyone in American society, regardless of sex, national origin, racial identity, religious belief, sexual orientation, etc.
"Marriage" as a word in the American language does not belong to any one individual, organization or religious institution. It cannot be copyrighted.
Sooner or later, in one way or another, the supreme law of the land will level the playing field and grant to same-sex couples the same privileges, rights, protections and obligations that we opposite-sex couples now enjoy.
