A vast majority of Utah’s fourth-graders, who are at a critical time, can’t read or do math at grade level.
I just don’t get how that happens. What in hell goes on during all those class hours every weekday for grades 1-3?

We’d be better off teaching only reading, writing and arithmetic and really get them right.
Make it a law that schools can’t promote students who don’t read and compute at grade level. Make failing students go to summer school.
Make their teachers go, too. Students aren’t failing; teachers and parents are.
Such a law would make a huge difference, so why is the Legislature instead debating foolish proposals? Focus on the fundamentals!
