I am appalled by the ignorance demonstrated by Sen. Orrin Hatch in his video address to the gathering of "conservatives" in Washington, D.C. ("Hatch ‘misspoke’ about group’s abortion rate," Tribune, Feb. 16). He was caught repeating debunked statements by Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., that 95 percent of the procedures conducted by Planned Parenthood are abortions (it’s 3 percent).
This demonstrates Hatch’s incompetence. The staff he has surrounded himself with have abdicated their responsibilities as researchers and advisers. Anyone with a computer could have quickly checked the facts before going on the record debasing Planned Parenthood.

If I were to reveal the same level of ignorance in my job I would be fired immediately. Is this the type of professional conduct we are willing to settle for in our elected officials? I demand better.
