Re "Mormon officials apologize for breach" (Tribune, Feb. 14):

After the most recent embarrassment of LDS Church members performing posthumous proxy baptisms for the parents of the late Holocaust survivor and "Nazi hunter" Simon Wiesenthal, isn’t it time for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to abandon the practice of posthumous baptisms?

Not only are prominent Jewish leaders outraged by this practice, but so are many non-Mormons who aren’t Jewish.

When the LDS Church looks for respectability among other Christian faiths, this one practice of baptizing the dead keeps the church from being accepted as a mainstream Christian religion. This is a public relations nightmare that must be rectified by LDS leaders.
