With Iran threatening to disrupt the world’s oil supply, making the price of gas go up and with it the price of everything else, I wish America had continued in the course of oil independence President Jimmy Carter put us on.
We’d be stronger economically, diplomatically, environmentally, strategically. Smart.

Instead, don’t-worry-be-happy President Ronald Reagan made the U-turn, and we’re beholden to nations that aren’t our friends.
George Washington fretted over entangling alliances; today we’re caught by tangled oil sources.
Long ago, we should have dramatically raised gasoline taxes to reduce consumption and with the windfall revenue developed alternative energies. Now, prices will rise anyway, but Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and Iran reap the windfall.
Real smart.
Our leaders didn’t lead. It’s like we’ve got diabetes and now wish we’d exercised and eaten better. Damn!
Soon we’ll be in the environmental too-late boat, reaping the consequences of ignoring global warming. Today’s boastful climate deniers will then seem as lacking in vision as 1930s isolationists who said Hitler was no problem.
Now is the time to prudently prepare.
That used to be a mantra of the Republican Party. Instead, we wait for economic Pearl Harbors to belatedly jolt us into action.
Stupid.
