Doctor-patient deal

Last week I witnessed a miracle on Capitol Hill. Part of the Utah Legislature did something worthwhile when it voted favorably on a bill that makes complete sense.

I’m referring to HB240, and the body that unanimously voted "aye" and sent it to the full House is the Health and Human Services Committee.

HB240 rewrites the current statute to allow physicians to directly contract with patients for health care services for a retainer fee. In simplest terms, it allows doctors to provide the highest caliber of care without the limitations imposed by insurance companies.

So all of us who have been deemed uninsurable and thus undesirable (aka unprofitable) by insurance carriers will now possibly have a legal and superior alternative to the status quo.

I applaud the Health and Human Services Committee for seeing the wisdom in this bill and urge the full Legislature to quickly pass HB240 into law.
