Silly amendment
First Published Feb 11 2012 01:01 am • Last Updated Feb 11 2012 01:01 am

My, how time flies. Remember how just two presidential elections ago, when George W. Bush was running for re-election, the president came out in favor of amending the Constitution to ban same-sex marriages?

Of course, it was all an empty show to energize the base by throwing in a plank that would never become law. But it put the topic on all the talk shows and many state ballots, and the nation heatedly debated the issue. That November, more conservatives came out (so to speak) to vote on the issue, and some pundits say the extra anti-gay Republican turnout may have tipped Ohio and Arkansas, and the election, for Bush.

Back then, in only lonely Massachusetts was same-sex marriage legal. Now, with the state of Washington on track to become the seventh state, and with 53 percent of Americans favoring same-sex marriage, the idea of a constitutional amendment seems just silly.

The past decade feels like we liberals have just been spinning our political wheels, but when you look beyond the vocal loudmouths, progress in some areas has been achieved.
