U.S. District Judge Dee Benson should be ashamed of the sentence he handed down to that fine Republican and Latter-day Saint Matt Dahl — the former director of This is the Place Heritage Park ("Ex-director of This Is The Place park gets 6 months in prison," Tribune, Feb. 1).
Dahl was convicted of stealing more than $300,000 from the park, but when sentencing Dahl, the fine Republican judge appeared so impressed with Dahl coming from a strong Republican background and being LDS that he rewarded him with a slap on the wrist of less than a year in prison. Prosecutors were seeking a 33-month sentence.

Benson should not only be ashamed, he should be embarrassed by his behavior and his comments in sentencing Dahl, and he should apologize to the citizens of Utah.
As Dahl deserves a sentence more befitting his serious crime, Benson deserves every bit of criticism, questioning of his ethics and objectivity that he gets. He failed the people of this state.
