Re "Dems say GOP abusing its big majority" (Tribune, Jan. 31):

Our political system is dominated by a select group of people; namely, older, white males. The people they represent are far more diverse. Our Legislature is moving to homogenize our representation further.

Utah participates in the Energy Producing States Coalition. This body was formed to encourage domestic energy development by participating in the creation of federal legislation. Not only does Utah need to be represented, but the needs of the entire nation need to be accounted for.

Currently, no more than three of Utah’s four members may be from the same political party. HB48 would strike this restriction, allowing all four to be from the same political party. The House has passed the bill; a Senate committee has amended it to keep representation bipartisan.

Diverse people have diverse ideas. Sometimes the best idea is one you didn’t think of yourself. The pool of politicians to choose from is already limited. Why would we move to restrict it further, especially when subjects as important as energy independence and the environment are at stake?
