I enjoyed Lesley Mitchell’s article regarding free tax assistance ("Get your federal income taxes done for free," Tribune, Jan. 29), but I was disappointed she did not include the one service that provides absolutely free both federal and state tax preparation and e-filing and does not attempt to sell loans for early tax refunds — the Utah Tax-Aide program sponsored by AARP.
This is an all-volunteer service, operated to provide assistance to low-middle-income senior citizens, but it is open to everyone, with no limits on age or income.

Last year we provided tax returns to nearly 11,000 Utahns. Our 130 trained volunteer staff worked at 33 sites in libraries, senior centers and community centers across Utah.
Our volunteers all pass an advanced level of IRS testing and are able to assist a broad range of taxpayer needs. The Tax-Aide program is part of the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs. The difference is that VITA has a maximum income limitation and their volunteers are not required to pass the same level of certification as AARP’s Tax-Aide volunteers.
