Re "Utah Legislature bill would allow open carry of guns" (Tribune, Jan. 31):
Rep. Paul Ray, R-Clearfield, claims that his bill, House Bill 49, which would allow open carry of a weapon, would ensure a uniform approach to protect gun rights and avoid confusion among law enforcement and local governments. I vigorously disagree with the bill and Ray’s reasoning.

What about the general public who would be subject to consternation and fear from seeing various people openly carrying firearms? When I see people walk in public with their firearm showing, it is truly disturbing. It makes one wonder about the intent of the individual, and it increases one’s fear for their own safety.
I am a permit holder, and at times I carry a weapon, but I take extra effort to assure that it is secured out of view of the general public.
If this bill is passed, it will only create problems for everyone. It should not be made law.
