Re "Utah Senate panel advances teenage driver cellphone ban" (Tribune, Jan. 27):
We all know that using our cellphone while driving is dangerous. To pass legislation that singles out any one group is a cop-out, such as banning our youth due to less time behind the wheel.

What about elderly drivers, whose reflexes are slower? What about those with stick shifts? We all managed just fine before using our cellphones in our vehicles, and we all can do it again. Talking on cellphones while driving is nothing but a bad habit.
Make handheld cellphone use behind the wheel illegal for everyone, and put some teeth in the law (good-sized fine). Hands-free cellphone use is a good compromise.
Senate Bill 128 is supposed to save lives, and not just the percentage of lives that is related to our youth. If this bill doesn’t apply across the board, why bother?
