The far right is espousing a throw-the-bums-out mentality in reference to Sen. Orrin Hatch. This is an act of cutting off one’s nose to spite the face, and it is inappropriate in the case of Hatch. He is one of the most conservative senators and has served Utah well. Just read Lee Roderick’s 2011 book, Courage: Orrin Hatch, Leading the Fight for Constitutional Rights.
If Hatch goes, so does Hill Air Force Base. A new senator could not save it.

In spite of the dislike by most conservatives, seniority is the rule of the U.S. Senate. Hatch has done many great things for Utah, despite being in the minority most of his tenure.
Republicans have a chance to take over the Senate in 2013, and Hatch will chair the powerful Senate Committee on Finance. As such, he can really cut the size of government. No new senator will have much influence on cutting anything.
Let us all get involved in the caucus selection process that is coming up, and keep Hatch in Washington.
