"Utah’s independent voice since 1871." Subscribers to The Salt Lake Tribune see this familiar tag line every day, year after year, atop the front page.
As a subscriber for many decades, I haven’t always found the writing or content of The Trib agreeable. Nevertheless, I am grateful that I have access to information that tries to inform.

Case in point: Gov. Gary Herbert’s recent State of the State address. His bash-the-feds address made no reference to the partnerships Utah has with the federal government (programs, money, resources, etc.). Without a resource such as The Trib providing the rest of the story, many would simply capitulate and accept Herbert’s postulating.
Federal presence doesn’t always work, but angry, adversarial chest beating (particularly in an election year) only widens the chasm of understanding and issue resolution. I look forward to more independent, informing reporting.
