Feds and Utah

Gov. Gary Herbert and the Utah Legislature are enjoying an anti-federal government binge at the start of this year’s Legislature ("Guv blasts feds, cheers Utah," Tribune, Jan. 26). Strange, because from 1981 to 2005, years for which data is available, in all but one year Utah citizens accepted more federal dollars than they paid in federal taxes.

Indeed, the vast majority of red (Republican) conservative states accept more dollars in aid than they pay the federal government, while the vast majority of states that receive fewer dollars than they pay in taxes are blue (Democratic) liberal states. So much for self-sufficient conservatives and lazy-leeching liberals.
