I often see people on street corners with signs asking for money, and it breaks my heart. I want to hand them some cash, but I realize this action hurts, not helps.
Even though I would like to think my money is going to be just what they need to help them sort out their lives, this is not the case. Giving them money encourages them to return and continue to ask for money.

The reason these people continually appear on the sidewalk pleading for funds is obvious: they need money due to some type of struggle. Perhaps these people do not know where to go to get the services or help they may need.
So instead of handing these people money, I propose to give them a card with the addresses and phone numbers of places dedicated to help people in their situation, like the soup kitchen. This way, people in tough situations can get the help they need instead of money that will only keep them in this begging rut.
