In "Bone to pick" (Forum, Dec. 27), Caine Alder criticizes gritty movies, like "Winter's Bone." Alder wants "pure entertainment, with clever story lines, wit, excitement and especially … superb scenery."

Not all of us go to the movies simply to be "entertained." Many of us, critics too, view movies as a comment on life, on art.

Life and art aren't always sweet and entertaining; they can be ugly and dark.

"Winter's Bone" was a true depiction of how some people live in the Ozarks. Please don't compare movies like "Winter's Bone" to "The Tourist"; artistically, they aren't even on the same level.
