A couple of weeks ago, we had the opportunity to go to South Bend, Ind., for the football game between the University of Notre Dame and the University of Utah. A U. win would have been nice, but the experience was still wonderful due to the unfailing hospitality of everyone in South Bend. Not just the paid staff, but everyone we encountered cheerfully said, "Welcome to Notre Dame" or "Welcome to South Bend."

What a difference between that experience and the vitriol and animosity that emanates from both sides in the rivalry games between Utah and Brigham Young University.

As Ute fans, last week we took the example of our Notre Dame friends and personally welcomed BYU fans to the U. campus. They were taken aback at that — rightfully so, considering how fans have been treated before on campus. And we have felt the same animosity when we've attended BYU-Utah games in Provo.

Shame on all of us! Whatever happened to the spirit of Salt Lake's Winter Olympics, "The world is welcome here"? We should start welcoming people to our campuses, instead of showing how hateful we can be. It would be a better experience for all!
