An elderly Challis, Idaho man, who died when his pickup truck was rearended on Interstate 15 last week, has been identified by Utah Highway Patrol.

UHP Sgt. Todd Royce said release of the identity of James P. Pickett, 83, had initially been delayed due to difficulties notifying his next-of-kin.

A relative told The Salt Lake Tribune on Monday that Pickett was in the process of moving to Ogden from Idaho to be closer to his extended family in Utah.

Pickett was driving south on Interstate 15 about 5:15 p.m. Friday near the town of Portage, when a Dodge pickup rear-ended Pickett's Ford pickup. The Ford was knocked down an embankment, through a fence, into a tree, a propane tank, the corner of a house and a parked car.

Pickett died at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

UHP is investigating the crash. Possible charges will be screened with the Box Elder County Attorney's Office when that probe is completed.
