Search and rescue crews recovered the body of a 19-year-old hiker late Friday morning in Little Cottonwood Canyon.
The victim was identified as Joshua Linares, 19, of West Jordan.
Unified Police Department Lt. Justin Hoyal said dispatchers received a 911 call from the man's family at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, reporting he was overdue from an excursion into the Lisa Falls area, about 3 miles east of the mouth of the canyon.
Hoyal said search and rescue crews, aided by a helicopter, looked for the man until safety concerns forced them to suspend efforts at 11:30 p.m. Thursday.
The search resumed at dawn Friday, and at 9:15 a.m., a helicopter spotted the victim's remains in Coalpit Gulch. At about 11:30 a.m. Friday, ground crews recovered the body and took it to a spot where the Department of Public Safety helicopter hoisted it out.
It appeared Linares had fallen in excess of 100 feet. Hoyal said the area is rugged, steep and recommended only for trekkers with "technical climbing gear," which Linares did not have with him.
"This appears to have just been a very tragic accident," Hoyal said.
