Cache County sheriff's detectives worked through the night investigating what they turned out to be a complicated case of a domestic disturbance that ended in deadly gunfire at a Hyrum home.

Sheriff's Lt. Mike Peterson said Wednesday that the shooting occurred about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday inside a rental house near 100 North and 600 East.

Two men — reportedly brothers-in-law — had been arguing inside the home over an otherwise unspecified property issue when both pulled out handguns and gunfire erupted.

Peterson said the dead man was identified as Robert J. Van Hemert, 37, of Hyrum. Questioned at the scene, but not immediately arrested, was his brother-in-law Aaron Smith, 40, of Provo.

Peterson said that Smith told officers he had fired the fatal shots. Whether he did so in self-defense was one of the questions that remained under investigation.

"At this point in time, no arrests have been made and the investigation is still in full swing. Our goal is complete this investigation as thoroughly as possible before it is referred the Cache County Attorney's Office for review," Peterson said.

Citing the ongoing nature of the investigation, Peterson declined to discuss further details.
